PPG Forms Partnership With SiNode Systems for Vehicle Battery Technology

Project focuses on commercializing high-energy anode materials

PITTSBURGH–(BUSINESS WIRE)–PPG (NYSE:PPG) today announced it has entered into a partnership with SiNode Systems to accelerate the commercialization of high-energy anode materials for advanced battery applications in electric vehicles. The 30-month project will enable the partners to rapidly develop and demonstrate anode materials that will store more energy than conventional lithium-ion battery materials, enabling electric vehicles to travel farther on a single charge or to have a lighter-weight battery.

In 2016, SiNode was selected among several competitors to receive a contract for the project from the United States Advanced Battery Consortium LLC (USABC), which is providing 50 percent of the project’s funding through the U.S. Department of Energy. Project partners are funding the remaining 50 percent.

The project will focus on improving the stability and scalability of SiNode’s anode materials to meet or exceed USABC targets for a battery’s active materials, which store the energy. Raymor Industries will provide graphene – a nanoscale-thin layer of pure carbon that is required for the high-energy anode materials – to PPG, which will then prepare the material for SiNode. PPG will help both Raymor and SiNode scale up their manufacturing processes to production volumes to support the project.

“Partnering with PPG will allow us to accelerate the commercialization of our battery materials platform for a wide range of markets, from consumer electronics to electric vehicles,” said Samir Mayekar, SiNode co-founder and CEO. “Our team is thrilled to collaborate with PPG.”

Kurt Olson, PPG research fellow, said, “We believe SiNode’s technology has great potential to benefit the battery market, and we appreciate this opportunity for collaboration. Boosting the range and reducing the weight of electric vehicles through batteries that store more energy will increase the practicality of, and consumer interest in, these cars. Applying PPG technology to help improve the sustainability of products, such as electric vehicles, is a strategic goal for us, and we are pleased to participate in this project.”

PPG’s current goal is to have 40 percent of its total sales derived from sustainable products by 2020. The company met its initial 30 percent goal five years ahead of schedule in 2015.

AZ Electronic Materials and SiNode Systems sign Joint Development Agreement

August 6, 2014

Branchburg, NJ, and Chicago, IL (August 1, 2014) – AZ Electronic Materials (“AZ”), a business unit of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, and a leading global producer of high quality, high-purity specialty chemical materials used in the manufacturing of semiconductors, flat panel displays and LEDs, and SiNode Systems, Inc. (“SiNode”), a materials science company headquartered in Chicago, IL developing advanced materials for the energy storage market, announce they have entered into a Joint Development Agreement with the goal of commercializing graphene-based materials for lithium-ion batteries.

AZ has exclusive worldwide rights to the high yield preparation methods of graphene oxide invented by Dr. James Tour’s group at Rice University, TX. SiNode has exclusive worldwide rights to silicon-graphene electrode materials developed in Dr. Harold Kung’s group at Northwestern University. Under the Joint Development Agreement, AZ and SiNode will develop graphene-based electrode materials that deliver both higher energy density and improved rate capabilities, enabling longer lasting, faster charging lithium-ion batteries.

Pairing AZ’s graphene oxide with SiNode’s novel electrode materials technology offers battery manufacturers a significant improvement in cell level performance. Prototype tests have demonstrated how layering nanosilicon in between porous graphene sheets creates passages for rapid Li-ion diffusion while also buffering silicon expansion during lithiation, enabling high storage capacity at high rates with extended cycling stability.

Geoff Wild, AZ’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), commented: “Our collaboration with SiNode provides AZ with the opportunity to bring new material solutions to our customers in our core business and to help SiNode enhance the production scale of their energy storage materials. SiNode’s highly innovative nanomaterials platform coupled with AZ’s unique precursor materials will result in strong product pipelines for both companies.”

SiNode’s Co-Founder and CEO Samir Mayekar, said: “Partnering with AZ will allow us to accelerate the commercialization of graphene-based materials to meet the demand of the growing energy storage market. As consumers increasingly adopt mobile and wearable devices, AZ and SiNode will provide the value-added materials to power the needs of the on-the-go consumer.”

SiNode is expanding its state-of-the-art R&D and pilot manufacturing facility in Chicago, IL in order to accelerate these commercialization efforts.

SiNode Systems Wins Rice Business Plan Competition

April 20, 2013

Commercialization strategy for superior anodes for Lithium-ion batteries wins the ‘Super Bowl’ of business plan competitions.

EVANSTON, Ill. – April 22, 2013 – SiNode Systems, a company developing superior anodes for Lithium-ion batteries, won the Grand Prize at the 2013 Rice Business Plan Competition, an award that has been described by Fortune and CNN/Money as the Super Bowl and World Series combined for startups.

In total, SiNode received more than $900,000 in prizes at what is considered the world’s richest and largest business plan competition. The funds will support the development and commercialization of SiNode’s technology, which has the potential to dramatically enhance battery life for smartphones, electric vehicles and other consumer applications.

“Winning the Rice Business Plan Competition is further validation that our technology and business strategy are well-positioned for today’s consumer electronics market,” said Samir Mayekar, SiNode’s Executive Director. “It’s also a huge boost for our management team, which is working hard to bring SiNode’s technology to market.”

SiNode Team

SiNode was formed in 2012 through Northwestern University’s NUvention program, which selects teams of students from the McCormick School of Engineering and Kellogg School of Management to commercialize technology developed at Northwestern. The company is commercializing a patented composite of silicon nano-particles and porous graphene developed by Northwestern professor Harold H. Kung.

The material is produced in a sheet-like form through a simple and highly scalable manufacturing process. It’s compatible with standard li-ion battery components (cathode and electrolyte), which means it can be used as a direct drop-in component to existing battery cell manufacturing—increasing anode capacity by 10 times, while decreasing battery charging times by the same factor.

More than 400 teams from around the world applied to the Rice Business Plan Competition this year, with 42 of them invited to pitch their business plans at the three-day competition held at Rice University. More than 300 judges, including venture capitalists, angel investors, entrepreneurs and business leaders, vetted the teams.

SiNode Rice Business Plan 2013 Winners

In its short lifespan, SiNode already has achieved an impressive record of success. In November 2012, the company bested competition from across the country to win the Energy Efficiency Category Award at the Cleantech Open Global Forum.

“SiNode is prepared to become a commercial success and have a big impact on how we consume electricity,” said Justin Kaster, Cofounder and President of the Midwest Division of the Cleantech Open accelerator program. “They’ve got a disruptive technology, a thoughtful business model and a smart, motivated management team.”

SiNode’s winnings of $911,400 included the competition’s grand prize—$350,000 from the Goose Society of Texas—as well as $100,000 from the OWL Group. Other prizes came from Mercury Fund, Greater Houston Partnership, the U.S. Department of Energy, Trailblazer Capital, PKF of Texas, Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, BBVA Compass, Miller, Egan, Molter & Nelson LLP, and others.
